Furthering the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to spread awareness among local communities to make Dubai a smart and sustainable city, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) launched a project to install solar PV panels on the homes of UAE nationals in Dubai. 5000 villas make up around 10% of the residences in the Emirate of Dubai. DEWA entrusted Etihad ESCO to oversee the project and awarded 10 contractors, 500 villas each, in Dubai.

Good, better, the best

Working towards sustainable future of the planet

Sharaf DG Energy deployed 12 different teams of 4 personnel each that worked up to 25 villas per day and successfully completed the installations within the stipulated time period.

The total system size per villa is 4.3 kW. 13 solar panels have been installed on the roof of every villa that will produce 6,220 kilowatt-hours of electricity in one year. This is equivalent to avoiding harmful CO2 emissions from consuming 1880 liters of gasoline or around growing 70 trees for 10 years.

We

Empower Communities To Achieve Higher

Levels Of Sustainability.

The major challenge of the project was dealing with 500 different entities, each with a pre-defined mindset. There was a need to create awareness and inform the families about leading an alternate lifestyle based on using clean energy. The expert team of SDG Energy sought to educate the local families about the environmental benefits of installing solar panels to transform their homes into sturdy structures that would withstand the future shocks of climate change and energy security. Our team won their confidence by actively answering all their questions and successfully collected the consent to operate forms from the villa owners.

On the engineering front, a major technical challenge was the orientation and the size of the buildings. Each villa had a different orientation with respect to the sun and had a different roof size. Our engineers designed customized solar PV solutions for such roofs to receive maximum sunlight and thereby produce maximum energy.

Thus, by installing solar panels each home owner not only became an independent clean energy producer but also inevitably became a part of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s great vision for Dubai clean energy strategy.
